Description
Prayer Plant is a low growing Maranta named for its leaves, which fold upward at night and open flat again by morning.
It is sold at 30cm, from AED 55 to AED 120, with a nursery pot or a ceramic pot.
Maranta comes from a humid forest floor and is the least forgiving plant we stock in Gulf conditions. Held at 21C in dry conditioned air, the leaf edges curl and brown inside a fortnight unless it sits in a humid room or on a tray of wet gravel.
How to care for Prayer Plant in the UAE
Indirect light only. A few hours of direct sun fades the leaf pattern permanently. Keep the compost evenly moist and use room temperature filtered water, since cold tap water spots the leaves. The most common local failure is crisp brown margins from dry air, and a browned leaf never recovers.
Where Prayer Plant works best

Why do my Prayer Plant leaves stay open at night?
The folding is triggered by the light cycle. A plant under lamps late into the evening often stays open. Give it genuine darkness overnight.
Can I use Dubai tap water on a Prayer Plant?
It copes poorly. Filtered water, or tap water left standing overnight, cuts the brown spotting from chlorine and dissolved salts.
Plants Care
Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results, use Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food.
