Pet Friendly Plants
At least two common houseplants are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed: Peace Lily and Dieffenbachia, both of which cause mouth irritation and vomiting. This page only lists species that are safe: Areca Palm, Parlour Palm, Boston Fern and Bird's Nest Fern are all non-toxic to cats and dogs according to ASPCA plant toxicity classifications.
Non-toxic doesn't mean indestructible from the plant's side. A cat that treats a Boston Fern as a chew toy will still shred it, even though the plant won't harm the cat. If your pet is a determined chewer rather than an occasional nibbler, placement out of reach still matters regardless of which species you choose.
For the full breakdown of which common houseplants are toxic and which are safe, including symptoms to watch for, see our pet-friendly plant guide, this page covers only the plants we sell that are confirmed safe.
