Description
Pandanus Variegated is a screw pine relative forming a rosette of long, arching strap leaves striped cream and green, with fine spines running along the leaf margins.
It is offered in one size, 40cm to 50cm, at AED 25.
Coastal origin makes this plant unusually tolerant of salt laden air and sandy ground, and it keeps its variegation in bright Gulf light where softer cream striped plants burn. The trade off is those spined edges, which catch clothing and skin on a narrow path.
How to care for Pandanus Variegated in the UAE
Bright light with some shelter from the fiercest afternoon sun, moderate watering, and free draining soil. The problem that comes up most is water collecting in the centre of the rosette where the leaves meet, particularly in a shaded spot that stays damp, which rots the growing point and stops the plant dead from the middle.
Where Pandanus Variegated works best
Place it where the architectural leaf shape is visible and where nobody brushes past: a pool surround set back from the walkway, a raised bed, a wide container on a terrace, or a coastal garden. Stock the beds around it from the outdoor planting for villas and terraces.

Does it stay this size?
No. It grows steadily into a much larger rosette and eventually forms a short trunk, so leave room for expansion.
Are the leaf edges sharp enough to be a problem with children?
The margins are finely toothed and can scratch, so keep it away from play areas and tight paths.

Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results, use Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food.
