Description
Bougainvillea Alexandra is a vigorous climbing shrub grown for its purple bracts, which are modified leaves rather than true flowers.
It is supplied at 60cm in a nursery pot for AED 70.
Dubai tap and groundwater carry enough salt to burn the leaf margins of bougainvillea over a season, showing as a dry brown rim while the centre of the leaf stays green. A long slow soak once a month pushes those salts down below the root zone and keeps the edges clean.
How to care for Bougainvillea Alexandra in the UAE
Full sun, at least six hours. Water deeply, then let the soil dry before the next soaking, because constant moisture gives leaf growth and no colour. The common failure here is a drip line running daily, producing a green plant that never bracts properly.
Where Bougainvillea Alexandra works best

How tall will Alexandra climb?
Given support and full sun it will cover a two storey wall over a few seasons. Without tying in, it sprawls sideways instead of climbing upward.

Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
