Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) is a tropical foliage plant from South Africa that grows broad, paddle shaped leaves on long upright stalks, giving a room height without a woody trunk.
Four heights are listed: 90cm at AED 250 in a nursery pot, 120cm at AED 350 in a nursery or ceramic pot, 150cm from AED 350 to AED 480, and 190cm from AED 600 to AED 750.
Bird of Paradise stores water in thick, fleshy roots, so a pot kept constantly moist in a cooled Dubai room rots from the base before the leaves show any warning. Letting the compost dry between waterings matters more for this plant than the exact watering day.
How to care for Bird of Paradise in the UAE
Place Bird of Paradise within one metre of the brightest window in the room, where a few hours of direct winter sun reach the leaves. Water when the top 5 centimetres of compost are dry, roughly every 7 to 10 days in a cooled room and less from December to February. Wipe the leaves monthly, because dust on the broad blades cuts the light the plant uses.

No. Bird of Paradise is not safe for cats and dogs, because the ASPCA lists Strelitzia reginae as toxic to both, and eating the seeds or fruit causes mild nausea, vomiting and drowsiness. Choose from our pet friendly plant range instead.
Will Bird of Paradise flower indoors in Dubai?
Rarely. Bird of Paradise flowers once the plant is 3 to 5 years old and receives at least 4 hours of direct sun daily, which few indoor positions provide. Judge an indoor plant on leaf size and steady new growth.
Why are Bird of Paradise leaves curling?
Bird of Paradise leaves curl inward along the midrib when the plant is short of water or sits in the direct airflow of an AC vent. Water thoroughly, then move the pot out of the path of the vent.
Plants Care
Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results, use Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food.
