Description
Barrel Cactus is a ribbed globe shaped cactus that stores water inside its body and holds its form without any pruning.
Two sizes are available, 40cm and 50cm, from AED 250 to AED 600 in a nursery pot.
Desert sun suits it, but a cactus moved straight from shaded nursery stock into full June exposure can scald on the side facing the sun, leaving a pale patch that never heals. Introduce it over a couple of weeks. Sandy UAE ground is close to ideal for the roots.
How to care for Barrel Cactus in the UAE
Full sun once hardened off, with water only when the soil is completely dry, roughly monthly in summer and rarely in winter. Root rot from overwatering is the single most common way it dies here, and the damage stays invisible until the base goes soft.
Where Barrel Cactus works best
Use it in a gravel bed, a rockery, or a raised planter by a driveway where nobody brushes past the spines. It reads well in odd numbered groups. See our cactus and succulent collection.

How fast does a Barrel Cactus grow?
Very slowly. A 40cm plant may add a couple of centimetres a year, which is why the 50cm size carries a considerably higher price.
Can Barrel Cactus stay in a pot permanently?
Yes, provided the pot drains freely and the mix is gritty. Its roots are shallow, so a wide shallow pot works better than a deep one.
Plants Care
Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results, use Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food.
