Description
Banana is a soft stemmed tropical plant whose broad paddle leaves rise from an underground corm rather than a woody trunk.
It is sold at 100cm in a nursery pot for AED 120.
Banana leaves tear along the veins in hot dry wind, and on an open Dubai roof terrace that starts by mid summer. The plant is also a heavy drinker, and a 45C afternoon can wilt it visibly by three o'clock even when the soil was damp that morning.
How to care for Banana in the UAE
Full sun to light shade with steady water and rich soil, plus feeding through the growing season. The usual failure here is under watering in July and August, when one missed day shows up as a collapsed leaf that never recovers its shape.
Where Banana works best

How much space does a Banana plant need?
Allow well over a metre of clear width. The leaves arch outward and tear quickly if they rub against a wall or a railing.
Plants Care
Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results, use Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food.
