Description
The Pongame Oiltree (Pongamia pinnata) is a broad canopied shade tree that holds its leaves through UAE summer and tolerates poor and saline soils that defeat most shade trees.
Supplied at 3 to 4 metres for AED 850, delivered and planted by our team at this size.
Salt tolerance is what distinguishes it in UAE planting. It copes with the salinity typical of Gulf tap water and coastal ground conditions better than most broad canopy trees, which makes it a common choice for sites where other shade trees have failed.
How to care for a Pongame Oiltree in the UAE
Full sun and free draining soil. Water consistently through the first season after planting, then reduce substantially as the deep root system establishes.
Where it works best
Where shade is the purpose: over a seating area, a car park, or a west facing elevation. It needs room for the canopy. For other broad canopy shade trees, see shade and ornamental trees.

How is a 3 to 4 metre tree delivered?
Delivered and planted on site by our team. A root ball this size cannot be moved or set by hand without damaging the tree.
Does it tolerate saline soil?
Yes, better than most broad canopy shade trees, which is the main reason it is specified on difficult sites.
Plants Care
Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results, use Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food.
