Green Conocarpus (Damas)

Green Conocarpus, known across the UAE as Damas, is the fastest way to build a green screen in a Dubai garden. It is sold here in two nursery sizes, 1m at AED 30 and 2m at AED 95, and is planted for hedges, boundary screening and windbreaks.

Damas is evergreen, holds dense foliage in full sun, and handles 45°C summers, sandy soil and salty irrigation water better than almost anything else grown here. Plants are grown at our Warsan 3 nursery on drip irrigation and leave in their nursery bag.

How to plant Green Conocarpus in the UAE

For a solid hedge, plant two to three per metre in a trench rather than separate holes, so the roots share improved soil. Water daily for the first four to six weeks while the roots take, then move to deep irrigation every two or three days through summer and less in winter. Feed in spring and again in autumn.

Trim two or three times a year to keep the screen dense; Damas responds to hard pruning and thickens after each cut. Left untrimmed it grows quickly into a tree of several metres.

Where Green Conocarpus works best

It suits villa boundaries, compound fences, farm and labour accommodation perimeters, car park edges and any spot that needs privacy or wind protection in one season rather than three. It is a common choice for landscaping projects where a site needs to look finished quickly.

One caution worth knowing before you plant: Damas has strong, thirsty roots. Keep it at least two to three metres from boundary walls, paving, pipework and septic or irrigation lines, and check your community or municipality rules, as some developments restrict it near infrastructure. For tighter spots near a wall, Ficus Nitida or Ficus Panda are the safer screening choice.

How fast does Damas grow in Dubai?

With drip irrigation and feeding it is one of the fastest growers available here, commonly putting on a metre or more in a year, which is why it is used when a screen is needed quickly.

How many plants do I need per metre of hedge?

Two to three per metre for a dense screen. For a looser line of trees, space them one to two metres apart. Send us the length of your boundary and we will work out the quantity.

Which size should I buy, 1m or 2m?

The 1m size is cheaper per plant and establishes fast, so it suits long boundaries where you can wait a season. The 2m size gives an immediate screen for a villa garden or an entrance that needs to look finished now.

Does it need much water once established?
