Description
Golden Pothos is a trailing aroid marbled in green and yellow, worth trying first if previous houseplants have not survived.
Supplied at 30cm, priced from AED 30 to AED 70, with three container choices: a nursery pot, a ceramic pot, or a hanging pot.
Pothos handles the mineral load of UAE tap water better than most indoor plants, and it will root and grow in a jar of it. What it will not take is a west facing balcony in June, where an hour of direct sun bleaches the marbling papery white.
How to care for Golden Pothos in the UAE
Almost any light except deep shade or direct sun. Water when the top three centimetres are dry, around weekly in a cooled flat. The usual failure is kindness: watered every few days, the stem bases go black and the rot climbs.
Where Golden Pothos works best
Kitchen shelves, bathroom ledges, the top of a fridge, a bedside table, or trained along a picture rail. It tolerates being cut back to nothing. It sits alongside our plants that tolerate neglect.
FAQ
Can Golden Pothos grow in water permanently?
Yes. Cuttings live in water for years if you change it fortnightly. Growth is slower and leaves stay smaller, but the plant stays healthy.
How do I make my pothos fuller instead of stringy?
Cut the longest stems back to just above a leaf node and push the cuttings into the same pot. They root and thicken the crown.
Plants Care
Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
Apply liquid fertiliser every 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results, use Folikraft ready-to-use Indoor Plant Food.
