Description
Calathea Medallion is a broad leaved prayer plant with rounded, almost circular foliage, feathered pale green above and flushed burgundy underneath.
Stocked at 40cm tall and priced from AED 100 to AED 140, it comes in a nursery pot or potted into ceramic. The wide leaves take up more shelf width than the height figure implies.
Those large flat leaves lose moisture quickly, and in a Dubai flat at low humidity the Medallion responds by curling its leaves into tubes during the hottest hours. The curl relaxes overnight, which is a useful daily signal that the air around it is too dry.
How to care for Calathea Medallion in the UAE
Filtered indirect light, well away from a sunny window. Water with filtered or bottled water once the surface dries, never letting the compost go bone dry. Watch for spider mite, which arrives quickly in dry indoor air and webs the undersides before the speckling on top is obvious.

How do I raise humidity without a humidifier?
Group three or four pots closely together and stand them on a tray of damp pebbles, keeping the pot bases above the waterline so roots are not sitting wet.
What are the fine webs under the leaves?
Spider mite. Rinse both leaf surfaces in the shower, then treat weekly with an insecticidal soap until no new speckling appears.

Watering:
Water your plant once a week or when the soil starts to feel slightly dry on the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can cause brown spots and leaf drop. If the leaves become curly or dry, it's a sign that the plant needs water. It's best to water your plant in the early morning or late evening when the temperatures are cooler. Always check the soil before watering.
Light:
Provide bright indoor light or indirect sunlight for about 6 to 8 hours a day.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. Avoid exposing the plant to drafts, as these can cause undesirable temperature fluctuations. Mist the plant occasionally, about twice a week, to help maintain optimal humidity levels.
Fertilizer:
