Air Purifying Plants

One plant in a large room does not measurably change the air in it. The effect scales with leaf area against room volume, which is why a single pot on a windowsill is decoration and a group of three or more in a living room is the thing people are actually asking for. Everything on this page is chosen on that basis: what to buy, at what size, and how many.

How many plants a room needs

Think in groups rather than in single plants. A bedroom or a small study is served by two or three medium plants, a living room or an open plan area by four or more, and a large double height villa room by a smaller number of much larger specimens instead, since one 1.8 metre plant carries more leaf area than four desk plants combined.

Bundles exist for exactly this reason. Living Room Bundle at AED 299, Low Light Bundle at AED 99 to AED 169, Hard Kill Plants Bundle at AED 99 to AED 149, Palm and Heart Bundle at AED 169 to AED 320, and Parlour Palm Bundle at AED 120 all group plants that suit the same conditions.

The four most cited species

Areca Palm from AED 99 has the largest leaf surface area of the common indoor palms, which is the attribute that matters most here. Peace Lily from AED 60 tolerates the lowest light of the group, making it usable in rooms where the others would struggle. Golden Pothos from AED 30 is the cheapest way to add leaf area and trails from a shelf rather than taking floor space. Snake Plant, sold here in pairs at AED 275 for two large plants, releases oxygen at night rather than only in daylight, which is unusual among houseplants and is why it is the one most often specified for bedrooms.

Larger plants, more leaf area

Dracaena Janet Craig runs AED 180 to AED 870 and reaches statement height. Dracaena Compacta is AED 240 to AED 510, Dracaena Dragon Tree AED 100 to AED 350, and Rubber Plant AED 60 to AED 550. Bird of Paradise Duo at AED 475 supplies two large plants at once, which suits a room corner better than one plant placed centrally.

Small and trailing options

Bird's Nest Fern at AED 65 to AED 95 and English Ivy at AED 65 to AED 110 both work where floor space is the constraint, on a shelf, a sill or a hanging position. Parlour Palm at AED 65 to AED 100 stays compact and handles the low light of an internal room. Pair of Table Bonsai at AED 160 covers a desk or console.

Air conditioning changes the care, not the species

AC pulls moisture from the soil surface faster than the room feels like it should, so plants in an air conditioned Dubai home dry out sooner than the same plant in a humid climate even though the room is cool. Check the top five centimetres of soil rather than watering on a schedule, and keep plants out of the direct path of a vent, where cold dry air browns leaf edges within weeks.

Light is the real constraint

A plant three metres from a window is in low light regardless of how bright the room looks, because human eyes adjust to dim conditions in a way plant photosynthesis does not. Peace Lily, Snake Plant and the Dracaenas handle genuinely low light. Areca Palm wants more. For rooms with no usable daylight at all, the low light plants range is the better starting point.

Which plants and why

The ranked list of ten, with what each one is actually good at, is in our air purifying plants guide. This page is for deciding what to buy once you know which plants you want.

For offices rather than homes

Workplaces have different light, different traffic and the problem of nobody owning the watering. Those are covered on office plants, including bundles sized for a floor rather than a room.

FAQ

How many air purifying plants does a room need?

Two or three medium plants for a bedroom or small study, four or more for a living room or open plan space. One plant in a large room is decoration rather than a measurable effect, since it scales with leaf area against room volume.

Which air purifying plants are best for a bedroom?

Snake Plant, because it releases oxygen at night rather than only during daylight, which is unusual among houseplants. Peace Lily also works if the room has little natural light.

What do air purifying plants cost in Dubai?

From AED 30 for a Golden Pothos to AED 870 for a large Dracaena Janet Craig. Bundles grouping several plants for one room start at AED 99.

Do air purifying plants really work?

The effect depends on plant count against room volume rather than on owning one plant of the right species. A group of several plants in a normal sized room is the realistic version of this.

Which of these survive low light?

Peace Lily, Snake Plant and the Dracaenas. Areca Palm needs more light than an internal room provides. No plant here survives a space with no daylight at all.

How often do I water them in an air conditioned home?

More often than a humid climate guide suggests, because AC dries the soil surface faster than the cool room implies. Check the top five centimetres of soil rather than following a fixed schedule.

Which plant gives the most leaf area for the money?

Golden Pothos at AED 30 for a trailing position, and Areca Palm from AED 99 for floor standing. Bundles work out lower per plant than buying the same plants individually.

Are these plants safe for pets?

Areca Palm, Parlour Palm and Bird's Nest Fern are non toxic to cats and dogs. Peace Lily and English Ivy both cause irritation if chewed, so check before buying for a home with pets.
