How to Propagate Houseplants from Cuttings

Propagation from cuttings means growing a new plant from a piece of stem or leaf taken off a parent. It costs nothing, and it works reliably on 6 of the species most common in UAE homes. This guide names those 6 with their rooting times, compares water against soil, gives the cutting method, and covers the local conditions that decide the outcome.

The 6 species that root reliably

Six houseplants common in the UAE root from cuttings with no special equipment. Golden Pothos, Heartleaf Philodendron, Monstera Deliciosa, Chinese Evergreen, Snake Plant and ZZ Plant. The first 4 root from stem cuttings and the last 2 from leaf or division material, and the timings differ by a factor of ten.

  • Golden Pothos, Epipremnum aureum. Roots in water at 7 to 14 days, plantable at 3 to 4 weeks. Straight into soil, 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Heartleaf Philodendron, Philodendron hederaceum. Water roots at 10 to 14 days, plantable at 4 weeks. In soil, 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Monstera Deliciosa. Water roots at 3 to 4 weeks, plantable at 6 to 8 weeks. In soil, 4 to 6 weeks. A cutting with an aerial root attached halves those figures.
  • Chinese Evergreen, Aglaonema. Water roots at 3 to 5 weeks, plantable at 6 weeks. In soil, 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Snake Plant, Sansevieria. Leaf sections in water make roots at 4 to 8 weeks, but a new shoot takes a further 2 to 4 months. Dividing the rhizome gives a finished plant the same day.
  • ZZ Plant, Zamioculcas zamiifolia. The slowest by a wide margin. Leaf cuttings in soil form a tuber at 3 to 4 months and a first shoot at 6 to 9 months.

Those figures assume the UAE growing season, October to May, at room temperature between 21C and 27C. Cuttings taken in July and August root at roughly half the speed, and a proportion rot before they root at all.

Water or soil

Water rooting starts faster and lets you watch progress. Soil starts slower but builds a stronger root system and skips the transition losses. Across the 4 stem cutting species above, water wins on speed by 1 to 2 weeks and soil wins on survival after potting.

The difference is in the roots themselves. Water roots are thin, brittle and adapted to being permanently submerged. Moved into soil, a proportion of them die, and the cutting then stalls for 2 to 3 weeks while it grows replacements. Soil roots come out thicker and suited to the medium they will live in.

Move a water rooted cutting into soil once the roots reach 3 cm to 5 cm. Roots left to reach 15 cm in a jar have committed fully to water and lose more of themselves in the move. Keep the mix wetter than normal for the first fortnight.

Dubai tap water is desalinated and carries dissolved salts that concentrate as the jar evaporates. Change the water every 4 days rather than topping it up, or the concentration climbs and browns the cut end. Keep the jar out of direct sun, since light on the glass encourages algae.

Taking the cutting

Take a cutting 10 cm to 15 cm long with 2 to 4 leaves, cutting 5 mm below a node with a clean sharp blade. Strip the lowest leaf so no foliage sits below the water line or the soil surface, then put the cutting in place straight away.

The node is what it all depends on. Roots come out of the tissue at and just below a node, so a cutting taken mid stem with no node at its base produces nothing however long you wait. On Monstera and Philodendron the node is obvious, marked by the aerial root nub. On Pothos it is the small brown bump opposite each leaf stalk.

Leaf count sets the balance. Too few leaves and the cutting has no sugar to fund root growth. Too much foliage and it transpires more water than a rootless stem can supply. Two to 4 leaves is the working number, and a large Monstera leaf should be cut back by a third.

Snake Plant and ZZ Plant work differently. Cut a Snake Plant leaf into 8 cm sections and mark which end pointed downward, because a section planted upside down never roots. Pull ZZ Plant leaflets off with the base intact and push them 1 cm into damp mix.

UAE conditions that decide the outcome

Three local conditions decide whether cuttings root here. AC dried air pulling moisture out of leaves that have no roots, desalinated water concentrating salts in a static jar, and summer heat draining the parent plant's reserves. Handle all 3 and the stem rooting species rarely fail.

Dry air is the main obstacle. A rootless cutting can't replace what its leaves lose, and a Dubai room under constant air conditioning sits well below the humidity these species evolved in. Cover the cutting with a clear bag or an upturned jar for 2 weeks. Leave a gap for air.

Light should be bright and indirect. Direct sun overheats a cutting that cannot cool itself by transpiring, and a dim corner leaves it without the sugar to build roots. A spot 1 to 2 metres back from an east window suits all 6.

Once potted, cuttings want the same conditions as bought stock. The indoor plants collection sets out watering and placement needs species by species, a useful cross check when placing a newly rooted plant.

FAQ

Propagation questions usually come from someone with a jar of cuttings on a windowsill and no idea whether anything is happening. These three cover which species are worth the effort, the choice between water and soil, and how long each takes.

Which plants root easily from cuttings?

Golden Pothos, Heartleaf Philodendron, Monstera Deliciosa and Chinese Evergreen all root easily from stem cuttings. Snake Plant roots from leaf sections or division, and ZZ Plant from leaflets, though both take months rather than weeks to make a shoot.

Is water or soil better for rooting cuttings?

Water roots 1 to 2 weeks faster and lets you see progress. Soil produces sturdier roots and avoids the stall that follows when water roots are transferred. Pot a water rooted cutting once its roots reach 3 cm to 5 cm.

How long do cuttings take to root?

Pothos and Philodendron root in 7 to 14 days in water. Monstera and Chinese Evergreen take 3 to 5 weeks. Snake Plant takes 4 to 8 weeks for roots and months for a shoot, and ZZ Plant takes 3 to 4 months.
