A shaded villa garden in the UAE is rarely one kind of shade. The bed under a ghaf, the strip behind a boundary wall and the corner beside the majlis each get a different number of sun hours. This guide defines three shade types by hours of direct sun, shows how to count them, then gives plants for each type and for the dry shade under trees.
Three types of shade by hours of sun
Shade in a garden splits into three types by the hours of direct sun a bed receives on a clear day. Deep shade gets under 2 hours. Part shade gets 2 to 4 hours. Light shade gets 4 to 6 hours, or bright sky all day filtered through an open canopy.
Anything above 6 hours counts as full sun and belongs in a different plant list. In the UAE the timing matters as much as the count. Two hours of sun at 8 am and two hours at 3 pm are the same number on paper and very different to a leaf in July, so a part shade bed that gets its hours in the afternoon should be planted from the tougher end of the part shade list.
Filtered light under trees like Prosopis cineraria or Albizia lebbeck needs its own judgement. A canopy that lets through patches of sun moving across the bed all day behaves like light shade. A dense Ficus canopy behaves like deep shade even at noon.
How to count the sun hours in a bed
Count sun hours by checking a bed once an hour from sunrise to sunset on a clear day and noting whether direct sun touches the soil. Do it once in December and once in June, because the sun's height at noon over the UAE changes enough to move a bed from one shade type to another.
Dubai sits at about 25 degrees north. At noon in late December the sun stands roughly 41 degrees above the southern horizon, and in late June it stands 88 degrees up, almost overhead. A 2.5 m boundary wall on the south side of a bed casts a noon shadow about 2.8 m long in December, 1.2 m at the March and September equinoxes, and under 10 cm in June.
So a bed that sits in deep shade all winter can be in full summer sun for hours. The reverse also happens under deciduous trees such as frangipani, which let winter sun through bare branches. A phone photo each hour, taken from the same spot, is a quicker record than notes.
Plants for deep, part and light shade
Each shade type has its own plant list, and plants moved one type brighter than their list usually scorch while plants moved one type darker stretch and stop flowering. The lists below cover plants that grow outdoors in UAE villa gardens all year when irrigated.
Deep shade, under 2 hours, suits 4 foliage plants:
- Philodendron Xanadu, a compact clump forming aroid about 1 m wide.
- Asparagus densiflorus, the foxtail fern, with upright plume shaped stems.
- Aspidistra elatior, with dark strap leaves that tolerate very low light.
- Ophiopogon, a grass like groundcover for edging deep shade paths.
Part shade, 2 to 4 hours, suits 4 plants that can flower on that light:
- Clerodendrum, with white or red flower clusters through the cooler months.
- Crinum lily, a large bulb with strap leaves and scented summer flowers.
- Plumbago auriculata, a sprawling shrub with pale blue flowers.
- Monstera deliciosa, planted in the ground where the afternoon hours are shaded.
Light shade, 4 to 6 hours, suits Ixora, Ruellia, orange bird of paradise and Duranta. Bougainvillea sits outside this list. It keeps growing on 4 hours but flowers poorly below 6.
Planting under trees and along walls
Planting under an established tree is harder than the shade alone suggests, because the tree's roots take most of the water and nutrients from the top 30 cm of soil. Dry shade under a canopy needs its own irrigation line and extra compost, or even deep shade plants will fail there.
Give each new plant under a tree a planting pocket of improved soil about 40 cm across and a separate dripper, and add 5 cm of mulch to hold moisture. Avoid digging a continuous trench across the root zone. The shade provider itself matters too, and a canopy that lets filtered light through gives a far wider plant choice underneath. The privacy and shade trees range has open canopied species that cast light shade rather than deep shade.
Along a boundary wall, the wall also reflects heat back into the bed on its sunny side and holds it after dark. Leave 40 cm between the wall face and the nearest plant so air can move.
FAQ
Trees and north walls create most of the shade problems in a villa garden, and the two short answers below apply the three shade types to each one. Count your sun hours first, since both answers depend on the number.
What grows under trees in a UAE garden?
Foxtail fern, Aspidistra, Philodendron Xanadu and Ophiopogon grow under dense trees, provided each has its own dripper and a pocket of improved soil. Under open canopies with 4 to 6 hours of filtered sun, Ixora and Ruellia also flower well.
What grows against a north wall?
A bed on the north side of a wall usually counts as deep shade in winter and light shade or better in June, so choose plants that tolerate both, such as Philodendron Xanadu and Clerodendrum. The outdoor plants collection lists these for villa beds, with light needs on each listing.
