Houseplant fertilizer is sold in three forms, and the one number that should decide between them is how long each keeps feeding once it is in the pot. What the three forms actually are

Liquid fertilizer is a concentrate of dissolved mineral salts that you dilute in water. Granular fertilizer is a dry salt blend that dissolves as water passes through it. Slow-release fertilizer is a granule sitting inside a resin or polymer shell, and the nutrients diffuse out through that shell.

The chemistry inside is much the same in all three. Packaging is what separates them, in the literal sense. Liquid arrives already dissolved. Granular has to dissolve first. Slow-release has to dissolve and then get past a barrier, and that barrier is the whole reason the third form costs more per kilogram.

A fourth product sits next to them on the shelf and is worth naming so you do not confuse the two.

A fertilizer spike is compressed granular material in stick form, so it behaves like granular fertilizer with a distribution problem. It feeds the wedge of root nearest the stick and very little past that.

Compare price per application rather than price per bottle. A concentrate that makes 200 litres of diluted feed and a 2 kilogram bag of prills are sold in units that do not line up, so the shelf price tells you nothing until you divide it by the number of pots each one will treat across a season.

How long each form feeds, in weeks

Liquid fertilizer reaches roots within hours and is spent in 7 to 14 days in a free-draining pot. Granular supplies roughly 3 to 4 weeks. A coated slow-release prill rated for 3 to 4 months delivers for 10 to 14 weeks at a steady 21C substrate temperature.

Those windows are where the feeding intervals printed on labels come from. Liquid products say fortnightly because that is genuinely when the supply runs out, and granular products say monthly on the same logic. Coated products say once a season, and under the conditions the rating was measured in, a single application really does carry that far.

Water movement shortens all three.

Every time water drains from a pot it takes dissolved salts with it. A plant watered heavily twice a week burns through liquid feed faster than the same plant watered once a week, which is why 7 to 14 days is a window rather than a fixed figure.

Substrate type moves the windows as well. A coir or peat based mix holds dissolved nutrients against the next watering. A gritty succulent mix lets them run straight past, so the same liquid feed lasts nearer 7 days in the gritty pot and nearer 14 in the coir one.

Why UAE heat shortens a slow-release rating

Coated fertilizer releases by diffusion through a polymer shell, and diffusion speeds up as temperature rises. Manufacturers measure the rating at around 21C. Potting mix on a Dubai balcony or in a sun-facing room sits well above that in summer, so a prill sold as a 3 month product can empty in 6 to 8 weeks.

The effect is largest on terraces, in courtyards and on window sills, where the pot itself heats up through the afternoon. It is smallest in a room held at 23C by air conditioning all year. Two pots of identical mix, fed with identical prills, will run dry at different times purely because of where they stand.

So read the printed duration as a cool-season figure, then check the prills yourself. Squeeze one between finger and thumb after 8 weeks of hot weather. A prill that crushes into an empty shell has finished. One that still feels firm and gritty inside is still working.

Which form to use in pots and in beds

Pots do best on a combination. Mix a slow-release prill through the top third of the substrate as the baseline supply, then add liquid feed during active growth for the nutrients a prill cannot deliver fast enough. Beds and lawns take granular fertilizer instead.

Liquid feeding an open bed is impractical at that volume, which is the whole argument for granular outdoors. Spread it, water it in, and the sand does the dissolving.

Pot size changes the answer too. A container under 15 cm across holds so little substrate that a full prill dose sits far too close to the roots, so liquid feed on its own is the safer route in small pots. Above 25 cm there is enough mix to buffer a prill dose comfortably.
