Yes, Dubai tap water is safe for the large majority of plants, with one condition: containers need flushing from time to time so dissolved minerals do not accumulate. Desalinated supply is low in the hardness that causes trouble in cities drawing on groundwater, and its salt content sits inside the tolerance of common houseplants.

The condition matters more than the answer does. Every irrigation adds minerals, the water evaporates, and the minerals stay behind. In an open bed, rain and deep irrigation carry them below the root zone. In a pot on a balcony there is nowhere for them to go, so concentration climbs month after month until the leaf tips show it.

Chlorine is a separate question and a much smaller one. Municipal chlorination dissipates from an open container inside 24 hours, so water left standing overnight arrives with the free chlorine gone.

What TDS means and what to look for

TDS stands for total dissolved solids: the combined weight of everything dissolved in the water, reported in milligrams per litre and read off a handheld meter as ppm. It counts sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and sulphate together, without telling you how the total splits between them.

Where chloride and sodium do the damage

Chloride and sodium harm plants in two separate ways and leave two different symptoms. Chloride goes up through the roots and travels to the leaf edge, where it accumulates until the tissue dies. That produces the brown rim and brown tip owners usually blame on dry air. Sodium never gets that far.

Chloride burn starts at the tip of the oldest leaf and works inward along the margin, and it leaves a narrow yellow band between the dead tissue and the healthy green. Air conditioning dryness produces a similar brown tip. The yellow halo tells the two apart.

Sodium works on the soil instead of the plant. Sodium ions displace calcium on clay particles, the soil disperses and seals, and water sits on the surface instead of soaking in. Sodium also raises the osmotic pressure of the soil solution, so roots work harder to draw anything, and the plant behaves as though it were drought stressed while the pot stays wet.

Which plants object and which do not

Sensitivity splits sharply by genus. Dracaena, Calathea, Maranta, Ctenanthe and Spathiphyllum show leaf tip damage first and at the lowest concentrations. Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, Aspidistra, most palms and every succulent take local tap water without any visible response at all.

Dracaena marginata is the clearest indicator plant in a UAE home. It reacts before anything else in the room, so when its tips brown while a snake plant beside it stays clean, the water is the cause.

Outdoor species tolerate more than indoor ones, because the soil drains and the occasional rain flushes it.
